About the role

We are looking to recruit a Trading Standards Assistant to join our Trading Standards Team on a permanent, full-time basis.

The purpose of the post is to assist the Trading Standards and Licensing Teams to carry out duties to protect the County’s consumers and businesses from unfair trading practices and to assist with license applications and compliance visits. The work will be related mainly to the enforcement of trading standards legislation, and as an authorised officer, you will be required to carry out related enforcement activities and when necessary, provide appropriate advice and guidance to local businesses and the public in relation to these duties.

On a day to day basis you will:

  • assist Trading Standards and Licensing officers to carry out inspections, investigations and surveys in accordance with the policies, procedures and inspection programs of the service area
  • respond to complaints, inquiries and service requests assigned in a professional manner
  • liaise with colleagues and external partners as necessary to initiate enforcement and compliance measures, carry out monitoring exercises and assist with the completion of projects in relation to trade standards issues in the County
  • identify and report any business misconduct, and under the supervision of an experienced officer, assist with the investigation of low level crimes either individually or as a team member, and attend court to give evidence if necessary
  • assist and carry out promotional work and training events, including presentations on topics relevant to the job
  • assist the teams in preparing policies, procedures, operating instructions and documented work systems in relation to trading standards issues
  • assist with processing applications for licenses relating to Private Hire Vehicles and Hackney Vehicles, Licensing Act 2003, Gambling Act 2005, dog breeding licences, etc., and assisting officers with compliance visits and surveys to licensed premises
  • assist officers in preparing reports, promotional material, statistical statements and any other mechanisms for raising the profile of the project
