Helen Palmer
County Archivist/Information and Records Manager

In a small authority you get to know lots of colleagues and form good working relationships; in my experience it’s not like some vast and impersonal business, it’s a real community of individuals who employ their skills and their integrity to deliver good services to the people of this county.

My Story:

Let’s face it, you wouldn’t be reading this unless you wondered whether Ceredigion County Council might be the right work environment for you. So here’s the honest truth of one experience.

I started work for the authority in 1996 ( yes, I’m in my fifties now !) and have found no reason to move on elsewhere. My job is intrinsically interesting and I have supportive managers and a great team. I progressed to my present role of County Archivist, Information and Records Manager. In my job I supervise the care of the historic records of the county – including parchment documents up to five hundred years old – but I also manage, with my team, the administration of all the documentation the Council produces during the course of its work. It’s a massive job, and can be scary, because it’s really important to make the right decisions, but it’s also incredibly interesting, and having a supportive and trustworthy team makes it all possible.

The Council has good work-life policies which allows me to manage my time in a way that suits both me and my role. My lunchtime exercise class makes me better at my job, because I’m fitter and more relaxed – and I get special rates as a Council employee, hurrah.

In a small authority you get to know lots of colleagues and form good working relationships; in my experience it’s not like some vast and impersonal business, it’s a real community of individuals who employ their skills and their integrity to deliver good services to the people of this county.

I work with the public who use the County Archives for their research, and that provides a great opportunity to meet new people and pass on some of my skills. And nothing beats the feeling of giving a talk about the county’s history to a village society on a summer’s evening and driving home through the dusk in this green and beautiful place.
