Looking to start or build on a career in Environmental Health and Public Protection? We are recruiting 3 individuals to join our Public Protection team!
This opportunity is open to candidates at different stages in their career. If you already have the required qualifications and experience, you may be appointed as a Public Protection Officer at Grade 10. If not, you may be appointed as a Public Protection Enforcement Assistant at Grade 8, with support to gain the qualification and progress to the Officer role.
About the role
Working as an authorised officer of the Council, you will contribute to a wide range of Environmental Health and Public Protection duties. The role includes inspections, investigations and surveys, complaint handling, sampling and monitoring work, supporting enforcement cases, preparing letters and notices, maintaining clear records, and helping to promote compliance through advice to the public, businesses and partner organisations.
For candidates appointed as a Public Protection Enforcement Assistant, the post is designed as a development opportunity, providing practical experience across key public protection functions while building the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to progress. For candidates who already meet the Public Protection Officer person specification, there is potential to be appointed directly into this broader role.
About you
We are looking for people who are motivated, organised and committed to public service. You will be able to build effective working relationships, apply sound judgement to practical problems, communicate clearly, work independently and as part of a team, and deal with people in a professional and tactful manner. Strong IT skills are essential, including confidence in Microsoft 365 applications and the ability to work effectively in a modern digital environment.
For the Public Protection Enforcement Assistant career progression post, applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification. The role also requires the ability to manage confidential information.
Using their own travel arrangements, the postholder must be able to attend locations across the county at very short notice, in order to respond promptly to operational and service demands.
Candidates seeking consideration for the Public Protection Officer role should be able to demonstrate that they meet the full person specification for that post, including the required qualifications or equivalent experience and the broader level of professional competence expected of a Public Protection Officer.
Career progression and development
The Public Protection Enforcement Assistant post offers a structured pathway to a Public Protection Officer on successful completion of the agreed qualifications, competencies and portfolio of evidence, normally within two years or sooner. Development may include training across areas such as food safety, environmental protection, health and safety, public health, animal health and welfare, and evidence gathering, depending on service needs.
The progression route is intended to support the successful candidate to develop practical competence in core areas of public protection work, with progress reviewed periodically by the line manager.
Why join us?
This is an excellent opportunity to join a varied and rewarding frontline regulatory service. Whether you are looking to develop into a Public Protection Officer through a supported progression route, or you already have the experience to operate at that level, this role offers the chance to build or continue a meaningful career protecting public health, communities and the environment.
Welsh language
Applications are welcome from both Welsh and non-Welsh speakers, and support is provided to help successful candidates reach the required standard.
Additional information
This is a permanent full-time post for 37 hours per week. The postholder may occasionally be required to work outside normal office hours and at different office locations within the County, depending on service needs.
