An opportunity has arisen within the Council’s Corporate Service Support Service for a Senior Service Support Officer to be recruited into the structure. This part-time, fixed term role will provide an administrative support function and will involve working as part of a team within the Coroner’s Office. It is the duty of the Coroner to investigate certain unexplained deaths.

The postholder will be required to be office based at Canolfan Rheidol – Aberystwyth and work agreed hours across the working week. It is a busy service with the successful candidate being required to work within a traditional paper based and modern digital working environment.

About the Role:

The main duties of the role include:

  • Act as the first point of contact for the Coroner’s Office and deal with all enquiries e.g. enquiries related to Inquests.
  • To liaise with a wide range of parties including bereaved families; witnesses; Hospital Bereavement Officers; doctors; pathology labs; post-mortem technicians; undertakers; Registrars and police as part of the role.
  • Deal with referrals from Bronglais Hospital, Doctors’ Practices, the Medical Examiner and the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths.
  • To prepare and check, as necessary in advance, a range of completed forms for the Coroner, requiring the Coroner’s signature e.g registration of death, burial, or cremation etc, ensuring the correct statutory procedures are followed.
  • To assist with the compilation, maintenance and updating of relevant registers and accurate updating of official Coroner’s Court documents.
  • Entering, extracting, analysing and presenting information on case management system including reported deaths that are referred by the Coroner’s Officers, together with relevant paperwork, including sudden death reports and referrals from the Medical Examiner Service.

About the Candidate:

We are seeking a candidate educated to NVQ 4 in Business Admin or with equivalent experience. Experience of working within an administrative setting will also be essential including good minute taking and audio typing skills. The candidate will be expected to deal with external organisations and members of the public and will need to be helpful and understand the importance of providing good customer service. Due to the nature of the Service, the individual must be able to handle sensitive, confidential and potentially upsetting information with professionalism and maturity.

This opportunity would suit someone with a methodical approach to work, excellent attention to detail and have excellent IT skills, including experience of database management.
