Work Experience

In your application, please tell us a bit about the kind of experience you’re looking for and any areas of the council you’re particularly interested in. We’ll do our best to match you with a suitable opportunity.

Applications are accepted throughout the year. We recommend applying well in advance of your preferred dates to allow time for placement arrangements.

Please note that work experience opportunities are not guaranteed however we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Please note:

Although there are several similarities, undertaking a work experience placement and volunteering are distinct and separate. A work experience placement is usually characterised as:

• Often organised through a school, college or Higher Education institution
• Are closely supervised by the HE institution
• Usually short-term, for a period of days or weeks
• Is learning-focused and designed to build skills, observe professionals and understand workplace practices
• Helps develop employability skills and may lead to a reference or insight into a career

Whereas volunteering is typically characterised by the following factors:

• The purpose is usually to make a tangible contribution to their local community, to use transferable skills to help or benefit others, or to make new friends and support the maintenance of good physical and mental health.
• Are typically self-initiated, with flexible roles and responsibilities.
• Can be short-term in or one-off in duration but can also be for extended periods, sometimes over years.
